While there are many more species of plants at Asherwood than listed in the wildflower section, these are some of the more common spring woodland wildflowers that bloom each year. These plants have little or no economic value, but served as important food items and medicines for Native Americans and European Settlers. These plants occupy a unique roll in forest ecology and bloom before the tree leaves create the heavy shade of summertime. One of the great pleasures of visiting an Indiana forest in the spring is to see these beautiful little plants. Remember that practicing good conservation by not picking the flowers and staying on the marked trails will help insure their survival. Some of these plants take years of growth before they are mature enough to have a flower. Below are listed the common names of wildflowers and the approximate month in which they bloom.

"Tell me of what plant-birthday a man takes notice, and I shall tell you a good deal about his vocation, his hobbies, his hay fever, and the general level of his ecological education."
