curriculumchallenge education

The Asherwood curriculum is science-based, conforms to Indiana State Science Standards, is interdisciplinary, experiential and the foundation upon which Asherwood rests. Asherwood is a spectacular forest, a living classroom, a unique natural area, and much more. While it is well understood that there are significant barriers to satisfactory science achievement in science education, the Asherwood program employs well-grounded instructional strategies that link multiple discipline areas to the curriculum. Science, mathematics, technology, language arts, character building and art are used to link contemporary environmental science skills and issues with students.

Each lesson is an integral part of a major science unit for each grade level and is portioned into three distinct areas. First are preparatory in-class activities followed by on-site field investigations and then activities designed for concluding the unit back at school. Each of these three areas is equally important and provides the strand that makes the Asherwood experience a holistic educational unit.

The curriculum for each grade level has been written by teams of teachers and the Asherwood Director. Teacher involvement insures that the curriculum is age appropriate and the activities relate well to text books and other printed classroom materials. While the curriculum is too large to post on the web site, following is a narrative that describes the major themes for each grade level, month of visit, daily schedule, student field guide and pictures. The exact schedule for each class may be found on the web calendar.
